Ironic and challenging: Indigo by Novoceram

Ironic, irreverent, challenging. These are the adjectives that best suit the new collection of glazed porcelain stoneware tiles “Indigo”, by Novoceram, the French manufacturer of ceramics since 1863.

The line, dedicated to the covering of floors, walls and furnishing accessories, is an original and contemporary reinterpretation of the ancient azulejo technique, which focuses on the contrast between a light background and cobalt blue shades.

Sixty-three subjects covers the small formats 20x20 cm and 20x60 cm, inspired by iconographic traditions different from each other in style and time. In this way, a detail of a fifteenth-century masterpiece such as Petrus Christus's “Portrait of a Girl” can be mixed with a 1950s cartoon’s onomatopoeia, the decoration of a thirteenth-century ceramic, a houndstooth pattern or the unmistakable silhouette of Sputnik 1.

The programmed inconsistency in the selection of subjects and the bold alternation between kitsch and refinement, classic and pop, high and low culture are the true stylistic codes behind this ceramic collection.
