After the success of the last edition, the Milan Arch Week returns from Wednesday 23rd to Sunday 27th May. The week consists of events dedicated to architecture and cities’ future and is promoted by the Municipality of Milan, the Milan Politecnico and the Milan Triennale, in collaboration with the Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Foundation.
“Urbania, a glimpse of the cities’ future” is the title of the 2018 edition; it is signing an articulated reflection around the future of the dynamics of architecture and contemporary urban complexity.
In particular, in Milan there will be many scheduled events open to the public, workshops, installations, exhibitions, performances, lectures with some of the most prestigious Pritzker Prize winners - Jacques Herzog, Toyo Ito, Kazuyo Sejima, Wang Shu - as well as very important people of the international panorama such as Bjarke Ingels, David Adjaye, Sou Fujimoto, Massimiliano Fuksas, Andrea Boschetti, Alberto Campo Baeza, Jeanne Gang, Patrick Blanc, Carrilho Da Graça, Ecosistema Urbano, Iñaqui Carnicero, The Decorators, Ensamble Studio.
The Politecnico and the Triennale are proposing the themes from a design and architectural point of view, while the Fondazione Giangiacomo Feltrinelli is exploring its involvements on citizenship within a program of talks and discussion, About a City. Places, ideas and rights for 2030 citizens.
Starting from the comparison between Milan and other international cities, the program - under the scientific curatorship of Stefano Boeri, Mauro Magatti and Salvatore Settis - will focus on three main challenges: the rising diversity and its issues of coexistence; the rights of minorities; the services access; the advancement of digital technologies; the technological infrastructure and the immaterial dimension of the urban future; the demands for sustainability and resilient green-based approaches for urban planning in alliance with nature.
Milano Arch Week will also involve the collaboration with some of the most important institutions of the Italian and international architectural and cultural worlds: the Order of Architects of Milan; the Prada Foundation; Artlab, the platform promoted by the Fitzcarraldo Foundation; Moscow Strelka KB. In particular, the Order of Architects of Milan will support the week promoting activities such as the architectural itineraries dedicated to the discovery of buildings built by housing cooperatives, an exhibition dedicated to the projects of the European Architecture Award Baffa Rivolta.
Among the exhibitions scheduled at the Politecnico there are the monograph about Carrilho da Graça, curated by Andrea Gritti, and Remix, curated by Marco Biraghi, while on May 24 the Triennale will open with “Luigi Ghirri. The architectural landscape”, a retrospective about the great Modenese photographer, curated by Michele Nastasi and the Cinisello Balsamo Museum of Contemporary Photography.
The intrusions of VespArch will return also this year, looking for urban itineraries on a Vespa. The trip will be made in collaboration with the main cultural and urban development operators including Artlab, Prada Foundation, Citylife and others.
