The “sounding” glass of AGC Asahi Glass at Ventura Centrale

The “sounding” glass is the project that AGC Asahi Glass, leader in the production of glass and high-tech materials, will present in the district of Ventura Centrale during the Milan Design Week 2018.

The concept - designed in collaboration with the up-and-coming Japanese architect Motosuke Mandai - will take shape in the installation “Soundscape” that, as revealed by Mandai, “combines transparent glass fragments suspended in the air with the invisible element of sound”.

The reinterpretation of the material brings to light a laminated glass characterized by the superimposition of two sheets of glass with a special intermediate layer. These three layers reduce the phenomenon of resonance, typical of the glass, reproducing a stable and clear sound in a wide range of frequencies, from the highest to the lowest ones.

The company's aim – as exemplified also in the project for the Fuorisalone – is to obtain a high-quality sound by using glass as a means, besides exploring new acoustic spaces. AGC Asahi Glass has been pursuing this objective through an intense Research&Development program based on the correlation between sound and glass, on both how to block sound and produce it, using the most advanced technologies and a years-long know-how in acoustic insulation and soundproofing.
