The wooden nursery school by Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter wins Träpriset 2016

Between sustainability and modern concept, the Mandrup Dorte Arkitekter studio in Copenhagen has achieved the prestigious Träpriset Swedish award (2016 edition) for wood architecture, bestowed every four years.

Located in Råå in the Øresund strait in Sweden, the wooden nursery school Raa Day Care Center designed by Danish architects stood out among the presented projects for its prime investigation into the relationship between structure and the surrounding nature, a key factor for the award. The use of materials and the attention to details are just two of the crucial factors that led the jury to choose the construction, consequently representing the symbol of the requalification of the entire area.

Built in the border area between the beach and the old fishing town, the Children's Day Care Center covers an area of 525 m² and is connected directly to the local school. The nursery represents the reinterpretation of the village structure concentrated in a dune. Here, the use of perspectives and geometries is particularly favorable and strategic to implement a good incidence of light that, in this way, favors children's activities throughout the year.

Formerly winner of the SKÅNE 2014 award and the Iconic 2015 award for the "Architecture - Public with Distinction" category, the Swedish project will also be exhibited at the next Venice Biennale (scheduled from May 28 to November 27, 2016) as one of the 9 main works of the Nordic countries Pavilion, to represent the related architectural movement.
