Located in Båly, on the southern Norwegian coast, Under is the largest underwater restaurant in the world and the first in Europe. Designed by Studio Snøhetta, goes five meters down into the North Sea, where it rests on the seabed.
The structure, whose shape is similar to a 34-meter inclined tube, does not deface the surrounding environment. For this purpose, the exposed raw concrete was chosen to “camouflage” the restaurant with the rocky coastal landscape above the water and, at the same time, to facilitate the growth of algae and mussels under water.
The imposing 11X4 meter glass allows the restaurant to work as a marine biology center for observing the ecosystem of the sea and the seabed.
The complex project required the involvement of Mapei to supply the best solutions to withstand the extreme environmental conditions of the harsh climate and cold waters.
Mapei supplied many different products for repairing and skimming concrete (CONFIX*, CONFIX FIN*, REDIREP 45 RSF*); products for anchoring (MAPEPOXY BI*, MAPEPOXY LR*, MAPEPOXY L*, NONSETT 400*); MAPEFIX VE SF chemical fixing for structural gluing; MAPEPRIMER M epoxy primer for concrete with surface humidity; PLANITOP FINE FINISH skimming for exposed concrete; RESFOAM 1KM and RESFOAM 1KM AKS* waterproofers for structures affected by water percolation; SUPERFLYT* additive for mortars.
Finally, for the laying of 3D ceramic tile in the bathrooms, they selected the ULTRABOND MS RAPID adhesive with high initial suction effect and quick drying.
