Occupying a surface area of 200,000 square metres and dominated by the magnificent setting of the River Qiantang, the Metropolis 79 project developed by Vanke and designed by the American architect Robert Stern is a residential complex reaching a maximum height of 120 metres. Based on a decumanus (main axis) and cardo (transverse axis) layout, it encompasses a dwelling area that is majestic and peaceful in equal measure.
The design is one of Stern's best works, with a perfectly symmetrical structure incorporating four towers, one at each corner, so that whatever angle you see it from, the skyline develops as a harmonious unit. The proportions are balanced and the luxurious interiors make the project a perfect example of neo-classical architecture.
The building melts into the surrounding landscape, but also connects the city with the rest of the world, through the architectural allusions to Ancient Rome and the Greek golden ratio. It is Vanke's policy, after all, to acquire the most interesting elements of western culture, while exporting its own real estate know-how and competencies to European countries.
The new complex built by Vanke is a blend of innovation, technical prowess and aesthetic elegance. As well as Robert Stern, it involved a string of other top names, such as BLD (USA) for the interior design, LSI (USA) for the landscape architecture, ALG (Japan) for the lighting and 2X4 for the logo.
State-of-the-art home automation and technology pervades the entire project, starting with remote vehicle recognition by means of high-tech sensors installed at the entrance. The complex is also equipped with an innovative facial recognition system that identifies the faces of residents and authorises their entry into the building. Even the lift is connected to this system and is capable of taking residents directly to the floor on which they live. There's also a digital video communication system with which you can make video calls free of charge, and a monitoring system for the grounds, to ensure the security of residents.
On the environmental front, the project includes a multi-layer filtering membrane and a top-quality air conditioning system, a water treatment system in each apartment, and doors fitted with dust-proofing systems for a completely green life-style.
