Micro living: aVOID by Häfele and Schüco is arriving in Milan

An area of just 9 square meters to live and inhabit the world: this is aVOID, powered by Häfele and Schüco, arriving at the Fuorisalone 2018. Designed by Leonardo Di Chiara, young architect and engineer from Pesaro, as an alternative choice to the traditional home concept, aVOID is a tiny mobile house, entirely developed and Made in Italy. It shows that is still possible to rethink our lifestyle habits in a more sustainable way, in line with the fluid needs of future living.

The design

aVOID is a prototype of trailer house including every essential comfort for everyday living in just 9 square meters. Inspired by void balance, from which it takes its name, it has a single gray room developed longitudinally and devoid of any furniture. However, by using hidden foldaway Häfele mechanisms, the space evolves horizontally and transforms itself, fulfilling all the common functions of a house. The folding bed can be both a sofa for the study corner and a comfortable two-person bench if combined with the folding table. By means of a system of recessed doors, the wall disappears leaving space for an equipped kitchen with LED lighting, extractor hood, concealed sink, hob and storage shelves.

On the southern side, the large French window with three shutters, designed by Schüco Italia, allows both the natural lighting of the space and its total opening towards the outside. Schüco signed also the backside window, with concealed profiles to maximize lighting, and the glass door accessing to the terrace. A small okumè bathroom includes the fixtures and a shower designed to minimize water consumption. By means of a retractable staircase, you can access to the roof, which is the most evocative corner to really feel citizens of the world.

“According to the Italian law, 9 square meters is the minimum size of a single room”, Leonardo Di Chiara explains. “In this respect, I would like to stress the need to rethink the housing standards of our houses, still linked to the regulations of the Decree of 1975, which takes into consideration only the walkable area without assessing the quality of space both in functional and technological ways. However, the situation in our cities has deeply changed and it will exponentially continue to do so. The demographic growth of urban centers and the increase in the so-called phenomenon of neo-nomadism will force us to find unconventional housing solutions based on sharing and reductionism”.

Flexibility, functionality, beauty and comfort are now the guiding principles of all companies investigating the social, cultural and architectural possibilities of micro living. Supporting the design of aVOID, Häfele and Schüco Italia embraced the principles of fluid and “tiny” living, deepening the industrialization issues of its building.

With the aim of promoting the debate around living sustainability, besides the needs of contemporary society, this year aVOID is going to be the protagonist of a traveling exhibit across Europe, from Berlin to Rome, which will arrive also at the Milan Fuorisalone.
